It is one of the short access peaks in the Huascarán National Park, Ancash. The summit of Mateo has a height of 5150 meters and is considered a five thousand technically medium ascent and the advantage is that it is possible to reach its summit in one day. However, any ascent to a snowy mountain involves certain risks and therefore the appropriate equipment, guides and experience are required.
Itinerary
- Day 1: Huaraz – Punta Olímpica – Pico Mateo – return.
Between 3:00 to 3:30 am pick up from your hotel in Huaraz and then we will drive to the city of Carhuaz where we will take the detour to the east side in the direction of the Cordillera Blanca, we will pass through the National Park control where we will register, then through the Ulta valley and later ascend in a zig zag to the Punta Olímpica tunnel (place where the walk begins).
After getting equipped and receiving a brief talk from our guides, between 6:00 to 6:30am the ascent begins through the moraine (rocky and vertical path) of the south face of Nevado Contrahierbas which will take us 2 approximately hours until we reach the beginning of the glacier. Here we will put on the crampons and rope the GUIDE to ascend to the summit for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
At the top we will stay a few minutes to take photographs and enjoy the surrounding landscape. The return will be along the same path, which will take us approximately 2.5 hours. to Punta Olímpica where transportation awaits us.
Return to the city of Huaraz – end of the tour between 2:00 to 3:00 pm approx.
